Twitter is one of the most widely-used social media networks, but it can also take some getting used to. With the use of hashtags and @ symbols, the Twitter method of communication might feel foreign at first if you aren’t used to it. Luckily though, there’s only a few things to learn on Twitter and it doesn’t take too long to get used to.
Another great thing about Twitter is that tweets are short and concise — the time investment in being active on Twitter isn’t as much as on some of the other social media networks, which can also make it more fun and to the point.
Steps to Get Started on Twitter
1. If you haven’t done it already, take a few minutes to fill out your profile, a photo or logo, a link to your website, a short bio about yourself or your company, and your location. The more complete your profile is, the more likely it is that people will connect with you.
2. Post a couple tweets. Don’t be overly concerned with the quality of each tweet you post — no one will be judging you on your writing skills. Try just sharing an interesting fact or an insightful comment.
3. It can be frustrating in the beginning of using Twitter, since until you build a follower base, you might feel like you are talking to yourself. This is completely fine. The key for now is just to keep consistent at it so that when people see your profile, they see that you have been active in posting engaging content.
4. Once you have your Twitter account and profile filled out, seek out other users who are relevant to your interests or industry.
5. Another good way to find people to follow is to use the search function on Twitter and search for terms that you associate with your industry or interests. You can then follow people interested in the same things and engage in a meaningful conversation.
